note: Scroll down to see Friday’s review of “The Long Run”

Scott’s going to kill me for posting this so early but I was supposed to post it at 9am my time and I know that there’s no way in hell I’m going to be up at 9am. So it’s now or never. The Scott in question, Scott Myers over at Go Into The Story, and I are going to do a monthly feature (assuming you guys like it) where we pick out a recently sold spec script, GIVE IT TO YOU GUYS A WEEK AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU CAN READ IT, review it ourselves the following Friday in a dual review of fates, and then have a cross-intergalactic-blog discussion about the script in the comments section.

One of the reasons I started this site was to get people discussing scripts. Unfortunately by the time you download and read them, the original review is buried 4 or 5 posts back. And who has time for history right? That’s like so yesterday. This way, you don’t have an excuse. We’re giving you the script a week ahead of time. Although the focus of the conversation should be on why you believe the script sold, you can discuss any of your intricate thoughts about structure, story, characters, plot. I want people to actually learn something. Yeah, you heard that right: LEARN.

The first script in this feature is titled “Medieval.” Said to be a “The Dirty Dozen” in the age of castles, plagues and serfs, the script sold for 800,000 dollars back in February. So this is your first assignment my friends. Your first Scriptshadow homework. Don’t let me down.

Script link: Medieval

edit: Mediafire’s been acting weird so if you can’t download the link you’ll have to hang tight while I find an alternative. Which will happen whenever I wake up. :)

Nice idea, I will take a look at the script, but the link isn’t working.

Nice idea and I personally appreciate the collaboration made between yourself and Myers. I look forward to seeing what unfolds. I just learned of your site and admit I am mixed between impressed and thankful.

Happy to have you out there doing this.

lol. Anonymous! Wait til next week. You can rip into it then.

I was able to download the script easily.

This is a new site, I see, but have you thought about reviewing foreign as well as US scripts. Many nations such as China, France, India, Egypt have very active film industries with the potential for a huge and growing viewing audience. The scripts are sometimes available in translation but you could work with a translator service as well. Of course, that costs money. However, it might expand your readership.

You also should try to see if you can get some radio spots such as on NPR and local public radio.

Anon, thanks for the tip. Yeah, translators are very expensive. I’ve actually looked into that. But if there’s an already translated script from somewhere that comes highly recommended, I’d definitely read it.

Sounds like DD’s old weekly script read. Damn near forgot about that.

Anyway, I started Medieval and it sucks my balls. Not sure if I want to waste the time finishing it.

I like Medieval. Not a huge fan of the end, with the sudden reveal of of (spoiler alert) Niccolo Machiavelli. I don’t really care for the beginning, where they make you read through the flashbacks in order like an asshole.

But I like the script. It does a really good job with the antagonists. It makes the Teutons, the Ravens, and the Mountain Men seem fucking insurmountable. That’s what I learned from Medieval–the better the villains, the better the script.

the last one really spoiled it for me: Niccolo Machiavelli?? I was expecting someone else, but that´s maybe my teutonic heritage speaking. Anyway, i made it to page 40 and folded, couldn´t go on with it for the life of me. At least these guys wrote a complete screenplay and sold it, that´s tons more than i will ever accomplish, so i won´t criticize. Still, i didn´t like it, i kept humming to myself “boring, boring, boring” (to the tune of Rawhide). But i learned something as well: You don´t need just a villain, a cutout superbad like edward the black (pure Evil!now 100% more evil), what you need is some kind of opposing force, an amoral center to your protagonists moral center. Like in “The Seven Samurai”, who is the opposing force? The Bandits? Hardly. Its the men themselves, their obsolete codes and vanishing mode of living, maybe its even “the march of times” leaving these men behind?! something along these lines. You sympathise with these men (still talking about the seven samurai), because they are decent, innocent fools, true to themselves in a changing environment, making a stand, a final statement. Well anyway, i´m digressing, but reading this script made me want to see The Seven Samurai again. So at least something good came out of it. I think the main flaw of medieval (beside the poor protagonists) are the even poorer antagonists. At least one of the bad guys should have a good reason for what he´s doing (besides being just pure evil), so the hero should not just have to overpower his opponent physically, its more than some clash of armour here, a good antagonist should always pose a moral threat as well, at least rattling the hero´s (and by that the audiences´) moral complacency. But no more pontificating, back to the script: I just dont like watching fights, when the outcome is all clear, just for the gore and some phoney excitement. So medieval left me pretty cold, but nice to know it got sold for a handsome figure.

I guess you just have to give them the concept of this odd band of warriors — there couldn’t be any “logical” explanation for the group’s existence. That being said, my main problem is with the pacing of the movie — it seems to be one single, almost uninterrupted chase. I think it needs some variation in pacing, some scenes where you can catch your breath.

Also, it’s very tricky to find the right tone for the movie — too jokey and it undercuts the action. Too serious and we don’t buy it.
